ORC Chem is one of the best stearic acid suppliers located in the heart of Selangor. As one of the best stearic acid suppliers, it supplies only the best quality to its clients.

Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid that’s waxy and solid. It’s one of the most common saturated fatty acids found in nature after palmitic acid. People usually get stearic acid by obtaining it from fats and oils by saponifying the triglycerides using hot water. The resulting mixture will then be distilled.

You can find stearic acid in abundance in animal fat, cocoa butter, and shea butter. Commercially, fats high in oleic acid (like palm and soy) may be hydrogenated to convert oleic acid into stearic acid.

Chemical Function/Application:

Generally, people use stearic acid to exploit its bifunctional character by attaching a polar head group to metal cations and nonpolar chain that confers solubility in organic solvents.

Food additive: stearic acid is used as an additive in some foods.

  • Soaps, cosmetics, and detergents: You can find people using stearic acid in producing detergents, cosmetics, and soaps, such as shampoos and shaving creams. Soaps may not be made directly from stearic acid. However, it is indirectly made of saponification of triglycerides that comes with stearic acid esters. Stearic acid esters include ethylene glycol, glycol stearate, and glycol distearate. They are then used to make the pearly effect you find in shampoos, soaps and other cosmetic products. Stearic acid is usually added to the soaps in molten form and are allowed to crystallise under controlled conditions.
  • Lubricants, softening, and release agents: stearic acid is also used to male lubricants, softening and release agents, as stearic acid is useful for its lubricating properties. In some industries, some people mix stearic acid with castor oil to prepare softeners in textile sizing.
  • Niche uses: stearic acid is an inexpensive chemical that is also fairly inert and non-toxic. Some people use it as a negative plate additive in the manufacturing of lead-acid batteries. It’s believed to enhance the hydrophobicity of the negative plate especially during dry charging. It helps reduce the extension of oxidation of the newly-formed lead when the plates are kept for drying in the open atmosphere.
