Acrylic acid is an organic compound that’s the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid. It includes a vinyl group connected directly to a carboxylic acid terminus. Acrylic acid is a colorless liquid that has a distinctive bitter or tart smell. It’s soluble with water, alcohols, ethers, and chloroform. Every year, a million tonnes of acrylic acid are produced.
Chemical Function/Application:
- Used to produce solvent-based acrylic resins: acrylic acids are used to make solvent-based acrylic resins. However, environmental concerns of solvent use leads to industries making water-based acrylics. Water-based acrylics are often found to be used in decorative, masonry, and industrial coatings. Sometimes, it can be used in adhesives, paper, and leather coatings, polishes, carpet backing compounds and tablet coatings.
- Manufacture polyacrylates: acrylic acid is used to make polyacrylates. Polyacrylates are used as thickeners, dispersants, and rheology controllers. It’s also used as a comonomer with acrylamide in anionic polycrylamide to make hydroxyacylates. It is then used in industrial coating formulations.
- Detergents: back in the 1980s in Europe, acrylic acid was used to make detergent. Detergent polymers are basically homopolymer polyacrylates and copolymers of polyacrylic acid, among others. These acids can be used as washing powder formulations.
